If you hold a CGPA of 8.5 and need it as a percentage, here is the honest answer: it depends on your university. There is no single universal formula, and applying the wrong one can cost you real marks on paper.

Under the CBSE rule, you multiply your CGPA by 9.5. So 8.5 CGPA becomes 8.5 x 9.5 = 80.75%.

VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) follows a different formula: subtract 0.75 from your CGPA, then multiply by 10. That gives (8.5 - 0.75) x 10 = 77.5%.

Anna University goes yet another way and multiplies the CGPA straight by 10, so 8.5 CGPA equals 85%.

Notice the spread: the very same 8.5 CGPA means 80.75%, 77.5%, or 85% depending on whose rulebook you follow. None of these figures is the “universal” answer. For a complete walkthrough of the standard formulas, see the main CGPA conversion guide; VTU students can work through the VTU-specific guide.

Bottom line: always use the formula your own university or board officially publishes, and double-check it against your marksheet before entering it on job or higher-education applications.
