A valuation of freight or passenger wagons gives owners a documented figure that takes the technical condition of the equipment into account. It is used for management decisions about operating, upgrading or renewing a wagon fleet.
Typical cases when a valuation is requested
- buying or selling rolling stock, to fix the market value at the moment of the deal;
- contributing wagons or locomotives to the charter capital of a company;
- bankruptcy, when property is put up for auction and a starting price is needed;
- leasing, renting, pledging as collateral for a loan, or insurance;
- calculating the cost of scrapping and dismantling;
- tax planning in transport companies.
Three valuation approaches The comparative approach analyses prices of recent deals with similar wagons and adjusts them for differences in condition. The cost approach calculates what it would cost to build a similar new wagon and subtracts physical and functional wear. The income approach is used less often, because it needs a forecast of future income from a specific wagon.
Stages The customer submits a request and documents, a contract is signed, the appraiser inspects and photographs the object, calculates the value, and delivers a report that is accepted with an act.
Documents usually asked for: ownership documents, technical passport data (model, serial number, capacity), repair and maintenance records, and accounting data such as date of manufacture and residual value.
