SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It measures your performance in one semester only, while CGPA measures your performance across all semesters so far. That difference matters, because a single semester result should not be written down as your final degree percentage.

There is no single SGPA conversion that fits every university, because conversion depends on the university that awarded the grade. The first step is always to find your own university’s official rule, on your result sheet or in its conversion note, and use that rule for that semester.

Two common examples show why the rule matters. In a CBSE-style conversion, the formula is Percentage = SGPA x 9.5. So an SGPA of 8.0 gives 8.0 x 9.5 = 76%. In a VTU-style conversion, the formula is Percentage = (SGPA - 0.75) x 10. So an SGPA of 8.0 gives (8.0 - 0.75) x 10 = 7.25 x 10 = 72.5%.

The same SGPA of 8.0 therefore gives 76% under the CBSE-style rule and 72.5% under the VTU-style rule. That gap is not a rounding difference; it is the result of two different official methods. If you use the wrong method, a form reader may compare your percentage with a classmate who used the correct method and find a mismatch, even though both started from 8.0.

To convert an SGPA safely, follow these steps. First, confirm whether the number you have is an SGPA or a CGPA. Second, find your university’s official conversion formula and write it beside the result. Third, do the calculation by hand once, even if you also use a calculator, so a typing error stands out. Fourth, label the result clearly, for example SGPA 8.0, VTU-style percentage 72.5%, rather than writing a lone percentage with no source.

A semester conversion is useful for tracking progress, checking eligibility, or estimating a result, but for final applications use the final CGPA and its official conversion, not a single semester figure. Keep the official result nearby when you fill in forms, and use the same figure on every copy.

You can check a value with a CGPA to percentage calculator.

Before you submit, recheck the subtraction and multiplication, confirm the rule belongs to your university, and keep the SGPA and its converted percentage together so the figure can be checked later.
