# P0420 and P0430 Catalyst Efficiency Codes: Diagnose Before Replacing Parts
P0420 and P0430 indicate that the powertrain control module has judged catalyst efficiency below its expected threshold. P0420 applies to Bank 1 and P0430 to Bank 2. The code does not, by itself, prove that the catalytic converter is the only failed part.

# 1. Preserve the evidence
Record stored, pending, and permanent codes before clearing anything. Save freeze-frame data, fuel trims, coolant temperature, engine load, vehicle speed, and upstream and downstream oxygen-sensor activity. Note whether both banks set together or only one bank is affected.
# 2. Resolve conditions that can damage or mislead the catalyst monitor
Diagnose active misfire, rich or lean fuel control, oil consumption, coolant intrusion, and exhaust leaks first. A leaking joint ahead of a downstream oxygen sensor can introduce oxygen and make a healthy catalyst appear inefficient. A persistent misfire or rich mixture can overheat and damage a replacement converter.
# 3. Compare banks and sensor behavior
With the engine fully warm and operating in closed loop, graph upstream and downstream oxygen-sensor signals for both banks under the same conditions. The downstream signal should normally be steadier than the upstream signal when oxygen storage is working. Similar switching patterns are evidence to investigate, but sensor waveforms alone should be combined with leak checks, fuel-control data, and temperature or emissions testing.
# 4. Check the electrical baseline
Inspect sensor connectors and harness routing near hot exhaust components. Verify heater power, grounds, and commanded heater operation. Use loaded voltage-drop testing when a ground or power-feed problem is suspected; a continuity beep is not a substitute for testing the circuit under load.
# 5. Confirm the repair
After correcting the root cause, clear codes only after saving the evidence. Repeat the original operating conditions, verify fuel trims and sensor behavior, and allow the catalyst monitor to complete. A repair is confirmed by repeatable data and monitor completion—not simply by a warning light that has not yet returned.
