# Debugging an OpenAI-compatible gateway: four checks before blaming the model

When a coding client fails against an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, the model is not always the first suspect. A short request-level checklist isolates URL, authentication, request shape, and response handling.

Contents

# 1. Confirm the base URL and path

OpenAI-compatible SDKs usually append /chat/completions or another resource path to the configured base URL. Configure the base URL at the /v1 boundary rather than duplicating /v1 in a client-specific path. For APIClaw, the documented OpenAI-compatible base is https://apiclaw.biz/v1; the APIClaw developer documentation is the reference for the supported paths and protocols.

# 2. Separate authentication from model selection

A 401 response means the request did not authenticate; it does not prove that the selected model is unavailable. Test authentication with the smallest supported request, then test model selection. Keep the key in an environment variable and never paste it into a bug report or a public example.

# 3. Capture the raw status and body

Client libraries often collapse several failures into one exception. During diagnosis, record the HTTP status, response body, request path, and model name while redacting the authorization header. A 404 usually points to a path or deployment mismatch, while a 429 indicates a quota or rate-limit decision rather than malformed JSON.

# 4. Check retry behavior

Retries should be bounded and should distinguish transient transport errors from deterministic 4xx responses. Use exponential backoff for 429 and 5xx responses, cap the number of attempts, and avoid retrying an invalid key or malformed request. If the gateway exposes request accounting, compare the client retry count with the gateway’s recorded count.

# A minimal diagnostic sequence

  1. Send one authenticated request with a known-good model.
  2. Save status, body, path, and elapsed time with secrets removed.
  3. Repeat once with retries disabled.
  4. Only then enable bounded retries and compare the results.

This sequence makes a gateway problem reproducible without assuming that a model provider is at fault. APIClaw’s OpenAI-compatible API setup notes provide the product-specific configuration context; use the endpoint and model names documented there rather than copying an example from an unrelated provider.
