# A practical room-measurement worksheet before ordering furniture

A furniture piece can fit on paper and still be awkward to use. This worksheet separates the dimensions of the object from the space people need around it. Measure the actual room and check the product’s current specifications before ordering.

# 1. Draw the usable footprint

Record the wall-to-wall length and width in at least two places. Older rooms are rarely perfectly square. Mark doors, windows, radiators, outlets, floor vents, columns and any area that must stay accessible. For an alcove, use the narrowest measured width. Keep both centimetres and inches only if you have checked the conversion.

# 2. Make a full-size floor outline

Use removable painter’s tape or sheets of paper to mark the furniture’s stated width and depth. Walk the path you would normally take through the room. Open each door, drawer and nearby cabinet. A sofa needs space to sit down; a dining chair needs room to pull out; a storage cabinet needs room for its doors to swing.

The manufacturer’s dimensions may omit protruding handles, overhanging tops or the space needed to assemble the piece. Check the product diagram and assembly instructions rather than assuming the listed width is the only clearance you need.

# 3. Check the delivery path separately

Measure the clear width of the entrance door, narrow hallways, stair turns and lift. Compare those with the package dimensions, not just the finished furniture dimensions. If a piece comes in multiple boxes, list each box. Ask the seller about disassembly or delivery restrictions when any clearance is close.

# 4. Test sightlines and lighting

Stand where people will enter and sit. Make sure a tall piece will not block daylight or a switch. For a dining pendant, mark the centre of the actual table, check ceiling height and test the intended hanging position with a temporary string before committing to an electrical location.
