# How to Compare HVAC Efficiency Claims in Contractor Quotes
Efficiency ratings are useful only when the proposed system, home, and installation details are compared on the same basis. A higher number on a brochure does not automatically mean a lower total cost or better comfort.

# Match the equipment
Confirm that the indoor coil, furnace or air handler, outdoor unit, and controls form a rated combination. Ask for the full model numbers and the matched-system certificate when available. Capacity should be supported by a load calculation or a clear explanation of the home’s heating and cooling needs.
# Compare the operating assumptions
Ask how climate, fuel prices, thermostat settings, duct losses, humidity control, auxiliary heat, and maintenance affect the estimate. Heat-pump performance can change substantially with outdoor temperature, while duct leakage can erase part of the expected efficiency gain.
Use the HVAC Quote Checker to see whether a bid documents the equipment, controls, duct work, electrical scope, permits, and commissioning steps. The printable HVAC quote checklist is helpful when reviewing multiple proposals side by side.
# Include ownership costs
Compare the installed price, expected energy use, filter and maintenance costs, labor warranty, parts warranty, financing charges, rebates, and likely service life. A modest efficiency increase may be worthwhile when the price difference is small, but an expensive upgrade needs a realistic payback assumption.
Before requesting bids, the HVAC Cost Calculator can establish a neutral planning range. Final decisions should still rely on local measurements, written scope, and verified equipment combinations.
